5 Tips for choosing the right artwork size and placement for your walls
Choosing wall art might seem easy, but it rarely is.
Because how do you know what size actually works in your space? In this blog, I’m sharing 5 practical tips to help you pick the right size wall art – with an eye for both balance and atmosphere.
Why size matters when it comes to wall art
Picture this: a tiny artwork on a massive, empty wall – it gets completely lost. Or the opposite – a huge piece crammed in above a narrow cabinet – way too much. The right size wall art is the difference between ‘meh’ and ‘wow’. It lets your space speak and shows off who you are.
Tip 1: Look at the size of your wall
Got a blank wall to fill? A good rule of thumb is to let your artwork take up around 60 to 70% of the wall’s width. That way, you create visual balance without it feeling too crowded.
👉 Pro tip: Use painter’s tape to mock up a rectangle on your wall – it’ll give you a better sense of the size before committing.
Tip 2: Hang it at eye level
A classic tip, but still so important: hang your art at eye level. On average, that means placing the center of the artwork at around 150 cm (59 inches) from the floor. It makes the piece easier to enjoy and naturally part of the space.
Tip 3: Consider your furniture
Have a big corner sofa, a wide sideboard or a king-sized bed? Then your art should match that scale. Larger furniture needs larger pieces. If you’ve got smaller furniture, go for something more modest in size. It’s all about visual proportion.
Tip 4: Mind the distance above furniture
If you’re hanging art above a piece of furniture, like a couch or dresser, leave 15 to 30 cm (6–12 inches) of space between the two. It helps the artwork feel connected to the setting, without overwhelming it.
Tip 5: Choose what feels right for you
Guidelines are great – but don’t forget your gut. A piece of art should move you, spark curiosity, or simply make you smile every time you walk past. Wall art is personal. Pick something that feels like you – that’s always the right choice.
Quick recap:
- Fill 60–70% of your wall’s width with art
- Hang at eye level – roughly 150 cm (59 inches) from the floor to center
- Match the size of your furniture
- Leave 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) of space between art and furniture
- Trust your gut – pick something that speaks to you
