Below the Surface: A Journey Beneath the Surface

With Below the Surface, I explore a new direction in my fine art photography. While my previous work was created in the calm and controlled environment of the studio, this series was born underwater. It introduced an entirely new dimension to my black-and-white photography, where I had to let go of control and embrace the unexpected.

Water has always fascinated me. Not only because of its beauty and movement, but also because of what it represents. The sound of gently flowing water brings me a deep sense of peace. One of my greatest dreams is to live by the sea one day, where the rhythm of the waves is always close. To me, water is a place of stillness. Beneath the surface, all the noise fades away. What remains is the space to truly feel.

That is exactly what this series is about.

We all experience moments when far more is happening inside us than the outside world can see. We carry hopes, fears, doubts, dreams, and personal struggles with us. So often, these emotions remain hidden beneath the surface.

Through works such as Release, Free, Hushed, and Breaking Through, I aim to give shape to these inner experiences. Not as literal stories, but as emotions. Moments of letting go, freedom, stillness, and personal growth. Feelings we may never put into words, yet ones that almost everyone can recognise.

Photographing underwater required a completely different way of working. In the studio, I can carefully direct every detail. Underwater, I had to surrender to the movement of the water itself. Fabrics floated freely, the body responded differently, and every second revealed a new composition. That unpredictability became one of the most beautiful parts of the creative process. I directed less and observed more, allowing each moment to unfold before capturing it.

To me, Below the Surface is more than a series of underwater photographs. It is an invitation to pause and reflect on what lies beneath our own surface. The parts of ourselves that are not always visible, yet quietly shape who we are.

Perhaps you will recognise yourself in one of these images. Perhaps they will tell you an entirely different story than the one I had in mind. That, to me, is the true power of art. Not to provide answers, but to evoke emotion.

Several years ago, I came across an underwater photograph that perfectly reflected my own state of mind at that time. Without a single word, it expressed everything I was feeling beneath the surface. That one image stayed with me. It made me realise just how powerful art can be when you truly recognise yourself within it. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to create an underwater series of my own. Not only because I was captivated by the beauty of water, but because I wanted to make visible the emotions that so often remain hidden. With Below the Surface, that long-held dream has finally become reality.

This collection is for those who are drawn to meaningful art and fine art photography that invites reflection. Sometimes a work of art does not need to explain anything. Sometimes it is enough that it moves something within you.
